5 Technologies that could make your (Ph.D.) life easier

Inevitably, technologies take a part in our life since we wake up until sleep. Phones are not just for calling as well as internet is not just for reading and answering. Much more we can do with them, so let’s see how it can fit your life and make it “easier”.

1. Cloud Storage

The age of handy storage could be ended since the ease of a cloud storage. You can directly upload your files including texts, raw and analysed data which mean so much for your publications to hosing server from any online computer. No add-on virus can be transferred and infected your laptop like handy storage did. Moreover, cloud doesn’t base on the computer drive but on the server so broken hard drive will not affect you anymore as long as you have an online connection which widely provided throughout the University. Moreover, you can easily share and sent your files to the receiver as soon as they have an email or a registered account of same provider. There’re some nice providers such as one drive, google drive and dropbox.

2. Free Telecommunication

You cannot deny communication is important for your work especially when you are stuck. Exchange ideas with enlighteners such as article author, your supervisor or even your Ph.D. fellows is necessary. Previously, email was successful to connect the world but sometimes you may need calling. However, what if that person is abroad and it’s too expensive to do so? Distance communication may help you with live chatting or even face to face communication. Moreover, you can leave voice massages, video massages or share files without any cost, except your electricity bill. Although Skype seems to be the most popular, some chatting applications are also competent such as Facebook Messenger, Whatsapp and Line.

3. Computer Graphics

It’s not about Hollywood CG or comic animations but it means computer created pictures which provide better understanding in some complicated issues. For example, explanation of drug association at protein binding site can be illustrated easily with computer-aid graphics.

Furthermore, using of visual graphic to present information, called infographic, can enhance recognition of trends or systems better than use only words. Nowadays, free infographic creators are available online (e.g. Vennage, Nulab, Picochart). You may try to adapt and make your presentation easier and more interesting.

4. Streaming/Webs

Online videos don’t have only television broadcasting but there’re something we rarely clicked on them. Many online lectures uploaded daily as well as TV series and music videos. If there’s no class opened in this semester, search one, it may shorten your Ph.D. period. Furthermore, if you usually deal with equipment, you may encounter with any kind of errors such as a flash light, unknown code showed on monitor and loudly beep sound and you have no idea what’s exactly happened. Now, streaming and manufacturer official website can help primary diagnosis. It may be a minor problem which can be solved with one press. If it doesn’t help, it is worth waiting for mechanic… and don’t forget to tell supervised person.

5. Smart phones / Gadgets

Thanks to the creators who fuse a mobile phone with a computer and the result is smart gadgets including smart phone and tablets. It can be many things that can make our everyday life easier as the same as Ph.D. life. It can be a notepad, books, recorder and everything I mentioned above. Their portable size allows us to put in the pocket and go everywhere. Let them help our life and make it easier.

What Happens when the Bubble Bursts? – Dealing with Depression as a Student

A PhD is wonderful experience! It is a great opportunity to meet new people, travel the world, build more skills and, ultimately, provide a better future for yourself and your family. While many students complete this experience without any difficulties, some students may find, on one or more occasions, they encounter stressful situations that can be difficult to deal with. If ignored, this can lead to greater problems, such as depression. Depression is a complex, yet surprisingly common, illness that can affect as many as 5 in 100 adults every year [ 1 ]. Despite these statistics, it can sometimes be difficult to diagnose. While some people experience more obvious symptoms such as low mood and general loss of pleasure in enjoyable activities, other symptoms such as disturbed sleep, changes in appetite and general agitation can also be an indication that something is wrong.
